Early in the 2008-09 academic session a new committee structure for the University was introduced, and terms of reference for the individual committees of Council and Senate were approved.
Terms of reference and membership for Committees of Council and Senate
A pivotal role in the new structure is played by the University Executive group (UEG), a joint committee of Council and Senate, which meets monthly. UEG coordinates strategies and policies, develops major initiatives, receives reports from the Executive Committees of Council and Senate, presents financial plans and make proposals to Senate and Council. Its membership comprises the Vice-Chancellor; who chairs the group, and the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellors/Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the Deans of the Faculties, the Registrar and Chief Operating Officer and the Director of Finance.
The Executive Committees of Council and of Senate develop strategies and policies, monitor their implementation across the University and provide advice for some of the Executive functions. These committees are chaired by the (Senior) Deputy Vice-Chancellor/Pro Vice-Chancellor with the relevant portfolio of responsibilities with the exception of the Finance Committee which is chaired by the Treasurer. All the committee include in their membership at least one lay member of Council. The executive committees report to UEG, but may report directly to Council or Senate, if necessary.

The Compliance Committees of Council and of Senate are groups that have been set up in accordance with good practice in the sector or are required in order to discharge statutory obligations imposed on the University. These committees report directly to either Council or Senate.
