Student on MSc Global Ageing & Policy (DL) programme wins Employability Award

Published: 18 July 2016

We are delighted that Darryn Oldford, who is on the MSc Global Ageing and Policy (Distance Learning) programme was awarded a Social Sciences Employability Award at the University of Southampton.

Darryn will be using the award this summer to undertake a placement with the Salvation Army researching day programme provisioning for developmentally-delayed older adults. He will be analysing demographic trends, reviewing policy, and ultimately developing a policy proposal for the Salvation Army.

This is a highly relevant project for the policy work with vulnerable older people which Darryn wants to pursue, and all of his tutors at CRA are very proud to see him putting his gerontological skills to such good effect.

This is the second time that a postgraduate student in the Centre for Research on Ageing receives this award. The first time was Mike Kalu in 2014, who completed the MSc Gerontology (Distance Learning) programme as a Commonwealth Scholar, and used the award to undertake a placement at Stroke Action Nigeria. Mike said of his experience:

"The Employability Award is one of the best things that happened to me during my MSc Gerontology programme. The award through the placement centre exposed me to the various networks which are the building blocks for my career prospects. For instance, I was able to develop a domiciliary social and health care service for the older adults in some rural communities in Nigeria. It was a great opportunity for me. I am sure that the aftereffect of the award through the placement centre is unending as I have continuously been involved in so many collaborative health and medical outreach [projects] for older adults in the rural communities in Nigeria."
