Facilities

Continued investment of £200 million over four years has given rise to a number of world-class buildings, including the award-winning EEE building, interdisciplinary Mountbatten complex and the new Life Sciences Building, which opened in September 2010. These new facilities are cementing the University’s status as one of the best learning environments in the UK.

Facilities provided in Ageing/Gerontology

  • Face-to-face students are given access to personal computers, internet and email, printing and photocopying facilities, a range of software packages and computing support via iSolutions. Research students are provided with a personal workstation in one of the research student workrooms.
  • Distance learning students are given their own University email account and access to a range of software packages and computing support via iSolutions.
  • All students (on all programmes) are provided with a personal tutor who can advise on academic and other University issues, and a dissertation tutor who provides advice and support during independent research. Face-to-face students benefit from an induction to the programme, module briefings and a dedicated dissertation workshop. Distance learning students are able to access specially prepared materials covering these areas on Blackboard.
  • MPhil/PhD students: Social Sciences provides support, and research and personal development training. Research students may apply for conference and training bursaries, and present their work at the annual LASS PGR conference.


Technical specification requirements for the distance learning programmes:

  • a modern computer/laptop with Microsoft Office software and ability to play Flash media files
  • Skype software to interact with the tutor and CRA staff on a regular basis
  • high-speed internet connection
  • PC headset with microphone
