About
Through high quality research, the Centre for Research on Ageing contributes to a better understanding of the experience of ageing amongst different groups and societies, which will in turn place us in a better strategic position to improve the quality of life of older people.
In addition to research, the Centre contributes to capacity building of future academics and professionals by teaching different postgraduate programmes in Gerontology.
The Centre is involved in various research and teaching activities:
- international research collaboration
- postgraduate teaching and training
- cross-faculty collaboration with the Southampton Ageing Research Network (SARN)
- international academic visitors/associates
Understanding the impact of migration on older people’s support networks
Support networks for an ethnic minority of older people in Romania have changed following the large-scale emigration in 1990 by their younger family members.

Addressing inequalities in the pension system.

Measuring unmet need for social care among older persons
Research by Southampton’s Centre for Research on Ageing and the ESRC Centre for Population Change – Connecting Generations project can directly inform social policies to reduce and try to eliminate the unmet need for social care among older persons.
