Help to discover cures for childhood and age-related blindness

Giving a child or adult the security of sight can instantly improve their quality of life. Preventing blindness, especially in children, is a life-changing opportunity that you can be part of.

The Gift of Sight appeal was established by Andrew Lotery, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University, in 2004. The funds raised by the appeal support ongoing investigations into the prevention and treatment of blindness.

This funding enables our research team to combine laboratory work with treating patients in the clinic – enabling our patients to benefit quickly from scientific developments.

To date, donations to the Gift of Sight appeal have resulted in significant breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of common causes of blindness, as demonstrated in this extract from BBC South. However, there is much more to be done.

How you can donate to the Gift of Sight appeal

The research laboratories cost approximately £600,000 per year to run, including salaries, equipment and maintenance. It is vital that we have these funds to secure our future research projects to beat blindness. We are incredibly grateful to every donor who helps us to continue our vital research.

Gift of Sight is delighted to offer a direct online donations facility – please visit our JustGiving page to make a secure online donation.

You can also donate using our University online form, stating a preference for The Gift of Sight Appeal.

Tissue donation

If you have signed up to the NHS organ donation scheme (+44 (0)300 123 23 23) you may save the sight of a patient with eye disease. Please tell your next of kin, or the administrator of your estate, that you would like to donate your eyes (tissue) as well as other organs. Any tissue unsuitable for donation may then be used for research or to save sight. If you haven't already signed up to donate your tissue please think about doing so now on the NHS organ donation scheme website.
