| Monday 30 January - 30 March 2012 | "Everyone is in admiration of it": Broadlands, a country house in Hampshire | Special Collections Gallery, Level 4, Hartley Library, University of Southampton | "Everyone is in admiration of it" Broadlands a country house in Hampshire The great house, surrounded by gardens and parkland, is a familiar image in the English countryside. It speaks of the power of the landed classes and their interests, from classical architecture and connoisseurship to landscapes of the picturesque and rural improvement. This exhibition looks at the country house, it's contents and context, through one Hampshire property, Broadlands near Romsey, mainly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when these establishments were at the height of their importance. Home successively to the St Barbe, Temple (Palmerston), Ashley and Mountbatten families, Broadlands was remodelled by Capability Brown and Henry Holland. Vignettes of daily life are drawn from family correspondence and the records of domestic service, horticulture and farming. The exhibition will run from 30 January until 30 March 2012. The Special Collections Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm - Admission is free. Visitors may be asked for proof of identity by Library Reception staff - please e-mail alumni@soton.ac.uk to obtain an alumni card for access if you haven't done so already. |

This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about Nietzsche from academics of international distinction. This thought provoking day will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about Friedrich Nietzsche from academics of international distinction. Friedrich Nietzsche attacked some of our most deep-seated intuitions about human life: he fiercely criticised traditional conceptions of value, of freedom of the will, of the self, of science, of the arts, of the significance of religious belief and, above all, of morality. In their place, he extolled human greatness, the possibility of self-creation, the capacity to affirm ‘the eternal recurrence’ and, among the virtues, honesty and courage. But who was this remarkable man, and what does his positive vision of an alternative way of life amount to? Places are limited so book your place early to avoid disappointment.
