Research Posts:

The ANTC is often looking for new research staff to work on particular projects in the field of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. We currently have two exciting vacancies available and are currently accepting applications.

Current vacancies:

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Aerodynamics

Salary: £27,428 - £33,734

School of Engineering Sciences

A post-doctorate research fellow is required to work on an aircraft noise research programme for a period of 2.5 years. The position is available for an immediate start.  The candidate will work on a collaborative project between EADS IW and the University of Southampton with the aim of investigating the application of active flow control pertinent to reducing the unsteady structural loads on landing gears and also the noise generated by a landing gear. The project will be predominantly experimental with an opportunity to perform some CFD simulations.

The unsteady aerodynamic flow field around a deployed landing gear leads to unsteady loads induced on the landing gear and also leads to noise radiation to the ground causing environment problems. This project is related to landing gear flow control using active devices. Various active flow control concepts will be investigated on simplified representative geometries. The work will include the design and testing of various wind tunnel models and some CFD modelling. The work will require close collaboration with a team of researchers and EADS IW contacts.

Applicants should have a PhD in aerodynamics, or a related area, or equivalent working/research experience. An understanding of the mechanics of unsteady aerodynamics and flow control will also be an advantage.  The candidate will need experience and a high competency in the design and testing of wind tunnel models and some experience in CFD would also be desirable. Knowledge of flow control will be an advantage.

Closing date for applications is 31 January 2012 at 12.00 noon. Please quote reference number 076911AK in all correspondence.

PhD/EngD Studentships:

The ANTC is often looking for post-graduate students to work on a broad array of topics in the field of aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, flow control etc. Fully funded studentships are often available - further details on the application process can be found within SES Postgraduate opportunities. Please state that you would like to join the Airbus Noise Technology Centre and that you are seeking a full studentship or contact

PhD studentship: Landing Gear Flow Control for Noise Reduction

Project description:

A PhD studentship is now available in the area of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of landing gear. The studentship provides a unique opportunity to work on a relevant engineering problem. The studentship is provided by EADS IW and University of Southampton. The unsteady aerodynamic flow field around a deployed landing gear leads to noise radiation to the ground causing environment problems. This project is related to landing gear flow control. The aim is to investigate interaction noise between representative components including both numerical simulation and wind tunnel experiment. The experimental work will include designing a generic wind tunnel model and performing aerodynamic and noise measurements. The numerical work will focus on how various flow control concepts could be applied with the aim to reduce the noise generating mechanisms. The aims include: a) large scale computer modelling of flow control applied to various components; b) coupling of near-field aerodynamic results with an acoustic propagation/radiation solver to predict the far-field noise levels; b) design and testing of a suitable wind tunnel models. The PhD studentship will provide a good opportunity to work with one of the largest aerospace companies in the world, and explore relevant problems in the aerospace industry.

The work will be based in the Airbus Noise Technology Centre (ANTC).  The centre brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and wind tunnel testing to develop new noise reduction and flow control concepts.

Candidates must have a first class or upper second class degree (or its equivalent) in relevant disciplines, e.g. mathematics, aeronautics or engineering.
