Polynomial texture mapping - visualisation

We have developed a virtual polynomial texture map rig used to derive PTMs for display of geographic information systems and geophysical prospection datasets. The PTM approach was presented by Malzbender et al. at SIGGRAPH 2001. The virtual PTM rig allows rapid creation of interactive topographic and other representations.

The example below shows a laser scan dataset gathered on the AHRC Portus Project and visualised in our virtual rig.

The virtual ball at the centre was incorporated as part of some tests on Highlight-Based PTMs, for exteriors and large object capture.

Recent work by the ACRG at Herculaneum also includes a Virtual PTM, this time to demonstrate the underlying geometry to a laser scan visualisation.
