Research interests

Dr Sonia Zakrzewski (Lecturer) is a human osteologist and biological anthropologist. Her research interests focus upon population variation and migration in relation to human evolution and modern human diversity. Her research has primarily concentrated on the population affinities and morphological diversity within a variety of regions, including Predynastic and early Dynastic Egypt, Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain and Medieval Islamic groups from southern Iberia. In Egypt, her work has concentrated upon the morphological patterns associated with the formation of the State and the intensification of agriculture. By contrast, in Andalucia, she has been examining the impact of religion and population groups upon biological and social identities and sexual dimorphism. Recent research has integrated the use of isotopic methods of analysis with palaeopathology and morphological analysis to better understand diet (in ancient Egypt) and population mobility and movement (in Islamic Spain).

She is heavily involved with the MA in Osteoarchaeology, which focuses upon both human and faunal osteology and palaeopathology. In September 2003, she organised the annual meeting of the British Association of Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology, and is currently the general secretary of the association.
