Biographical notes
Matthew Johnson joined Southampton Archaeology in 2004 from Durham, where he was Lecturer and then Professor. He became Head of Archaeology in 2005. The full text of his inaugural lecture, given on 10 October 2006, can be found here in PDF format.
Matthew's research interests include:
- archaeological theory, especially interpretive and interdisciplinary approaches;
- England and Europe AD1200-1800, particularly landscape castles and houses;
- world historical archaeology
- archaeology in its cultural and political context.
He is currently writing a general book on traditional houses in their social context 1400-1800, due for publication with Longmans in 2008.
