MS 116/2 Papers of Cyril Wernick (1917-45), a lance corporal in the Royal Norfolk Regiment, taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore and was held at Changi. Shortly after his release, he died of malnutrition and was buried in Madras.

Prayers for evening service, in Hebrew, written on official receipt forms from Singapore criminal prison; invitation to the dedication service of Synagogue Jacob, Changi Gaol, 26 Aug 1944; photographs of Cyril Wernick, his wife and Wernick's father; letter to Wernick's mother on his death; photographs of temporary and permanent tombstones of Wernick in Kasimode Jewish Cemetery, Madras.

Two articles from the Jewish Chronicle about Jewish prisoners of war in Japanese camps, 1945 and 1948.

MS 116/11 Papers of the Adler family, 1877-1923, including a small account book of Chief Rabbi Hermann Adler, 1877-82; a letter from Dr Adler, 27 Feb 1911, giving instructions about his death and advice about a successor; a letter to Dr Adler acknowledging the cheque for his son's articles of clerkship, 6 Jan 1887; and a letter from Jacob Epstein to Mr Adler, 1923.

The principal collection of Adler papers is in the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. Further letters from Dr Hermann Adler can be found in collections at Southampton in MS 116//63 and MS 176. Letters from Dr Nathan Marcus Adler (d. 1890), father of the Chief Rabbi, can be found in MS 116/50 and there are further references in MS 174.

Copies of eight documents relating to disused Jewish cemeteries, including two reports, one with corrections, by Lewis Emanuel, 1893; statement setting out permission granted by Great Yarmouth, Southampton, Norwich (1852), Portsmouth (1858), Aldershot (1865) and Belfast (1871) for grounds to be set aside for Jewish burials; list of burials in the cemetery at Great Yarmouth, 1833 onwards; letter from Wilfred Samuel to Charles Emanuel about the cemetery at Nevis, Leeward Islands, 12 Dec 1923; letter to J.N.Nabarro about burials, 9 Dec 1947; minutes of Canterbury Hebrew congregation, 1833-61; and a list made by the Board of Deputies of disused cemeteries, Jan 1933. Two microfiche copies of a tabulated report on disused provincial Jewish cemeteries or those likely to become disused, 13 Jan 1893. Correspondence, sample survey form, notes of results, report on stones in Canterbury, general report, relating to the survey of Jewish cemeteries in Great Britain undertaken under the auspices of the Jewish Historical Society of England to provide a record of burial inscriptions up to 1900, 1975-8.
