Powerhouses of bioscience
How Chinese research universities are gaining on the competition
Professor Guy Poppy of the School of Biological Sciences first visited Beijing 10 years ago, at a time when Chinese scientists were coming to the UK to gain knowledge from leading research institutions.
Now a new generation of scientists in research establishments in China is making major discoveries and inviting collaborations from universities in the US and Europe. Biological scientists at Southampton are already working in partnership with Beijing University thanks to a partnership award funded by the Biotechnology Research Council.
“Undoubtedly China is going to go from strength to strength in biosciences,” says Guy. “With the challenges that China has in terms of its large population, feeding itself and maintaining health, biosciences are going to be critical.”

Many British scientists are now spending time in Chinese laboratories - there are wonderful opportunities. I think in the future, the Chinese will be, along with America and the UK, one of the powerhouses of bioscience in the world.
