Scientists at the Centre for Biological Sciences and Medicine at the University of Southampton are working together on two new projects investigating the role of inflammation in dementia, financed by the Medical Research Council and the pharmaceutical company MedImmune.

Dr Jessica Teeling and Professor Hugh Perry from Biological Sciences and Professor Clive Holmes from Clinical and Experimental Sciences have been awarded a total of £170,000 to further their many years of research into the role of systemic inflammation in the onset and progression of age-related neurodegeneration.

They will be examining the role of cytokines in blood circulation and the brain and exploring if drugs that block these cytokines will protect against neuroinflammation and degeneration, These results may be beneficial for patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, who deteriorate after suffering from bouts of systemic bacterial and viral infections or similar conditions.
