The Biological Sciences July Open Days took place this weekend with record numbers to turning out to discover more about study at Southampton. Young people from across the country travelled to the University for the fun packed and informative days.

Biological Sciences are based in the multi-million pound Life Sciences buildings. There were talks on Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Neuroscience. Facilitated by course leaders, the talks gave budding scientists the opportunity to ask any questions they may have had about studying at Southampton and to learn more about what it’s really like to be a student at a Russell Group University.

There were displays throughout the Life Sciences building showcasing the flexible programmes available to students; the unique opportunities available to bolster employability and the high impact research carried out by Biological Sciences academic staff. Visitors also enjoyed laboratory demonstrations which gave them a taster of undergraduate practical work. Lecturers, admissions staff and student ambassadors were on hand throughout the day to talk to prospective students about their options and to provide them with help and guidance on one of the most important decisions they will ever have to make; which university course to choose!

Dr Lex Kraaijeveld, Director of Programmes commented on the energy of the day, ‘It’s really good to have such a buzz at the open days. The students are really engaging and interested in all the opportunities available to them and there are many academics on hand to answer their questions’. Around the University there was a wealth of information available to visitors and their supporters. There were accommodation tours, finance talks, student life sessions and studying abroad talks. In addition, visitors enjoyed University cupcakes, taking photos in front of the giant ‘UoS’ lettering and discovering the variety of student societies on offer at Union Southampton. The excitement spilled over onto social media with visitors sharing their experiences and entering the Instagram competition using the #UoSOpenDay hashtag, @UniSouthampton and @SotonBioSci Twitter tags.
