Promotion for experienced Southampton neuroscientist

Jessica Teeling has been appointed Professor of Experimental Neuroimmunology at the University of Southampton. Her promotion reflects her achievements in research into the biological mechanism underlying diseases with a neuroinflammatory component, including Alzheimer’s Disease, but also her teaching and outreach work to spread the word about the world-class research underway in Biological Sciences.

Jessica joined the University in 2004 as a postdoctoral research fellow after three years at the biotechnology company Genmab. Here she helped to develop a fully human monoclonal antibody for the treatment of leukemia, which was approved by the FDA in 2009. She studied at the University of Amsterdam. At Southampton, she is a keen member of the interdisciplinary Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG) which brings together senior and student researchers to learn more about key issues.

“I was pleased to have been appointed to the rank of Professor after 12 years in Southampton,” she says. “In particular, I am proud to lead and support my current research team and to witness the success of previous PhD students. I enjoy combining my teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates with my research into immune regulatory pathways and systemic inflammation in the central nervous system alongside my colleagues Professors Hugh Perry and Clive Holmes.”

Many students now in senior positions in industry will have reason to thank Jessica for her support as she has inspired and motivated them to take up Year in Industry placements; many have resulted in career development jobs at companies including GSK.
