Dr Francesco Rentocchini is a Visiting Fellow in Strategy and Innovation at the Southampton Business School.

Francesco is a Visiting Fellow. He has an established research record in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship. His research interests include innovation in the high-tech industries, academic entrepreneurship, university-industry collaborations and open innovation.

He was previously a Marie Curie Grant Holder with dual appointment at INGENIO (CSIC-UPV), research institute based at the Polytechnic of Valencia (Spain) and the department of economics and management of the University of Trento (Italy).

He contributed to several research projects, both at national and international level, and enjoyed research periods abroad in various internationally recognised research centres (e.g. Manchester Institute of Innovation Research in the UK, UNU-MERIT research centre in the Netherlands, INGENIO in Spain).

Francesco holds a doctoral degree from the University of Bologna.

Research interests

In his research, Francesco explores how innovation impacts on the economy and society. His current projects investigate the engagement of scientists with industry and the commercialization of science. He is also interested in the theory and empirical analysis of firm level innovation, particularly open innovation and innovation barriers and failure. He further explores how innovation leads to structural change in industries and sectors in terms of the modifications to the skill content of occupations and the reconfiguration of employment structures in industries.

Another area of theoretical and empirical inquiry in which Francesco has been recently active is the emergent green economy. Current work on this is on the role of environmentally friendly technologies on firm level sustainable practices and firm growth.
