Richard Cartwright, Senior Teaching Fellow in Accountancy at Southampton Business School has just been elected President of the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants. In the article below, he discusses his appointments, priorities and motivations for the role.

Why did you put yourself forward as a district society office holder?

I am passionate about the role co-curricular activities have to play in supporting academic learning and professional development.

I have undertaken voluntary roles within the ICAEW since starting my training contract, Chairing the Southern Chartered Accountant Student Society, participating in the Young Chartered Accountants Group, acting as an ICAEW Council Member, sitting on the Learning and Professional Development Board and now representing the region as District Society President.

What is your priority for the coming year as President?

“Education, education, education” I really want to use my position within SOSCA and Southampton Business School and my connections with professional training providers and local colleges to make sure we are offering CPD that is fit for purpose for existing accountants, helping those who are currently training and celebrating their success, whilst encouraging the next generation of students to consider entering the profession.
