Michelle Lowe, Southampton Business School Professor of Strategy and Innovation, is co-organising a major Food Standards Agency (FSA) workshop on how companies involved in the food supply chain can tackle public health issues surrounding bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics (antimicrobial resistance or AMR). She will speak about the global responsibility of tackling AMR in relation to food retailers and their meat suppliers.

The World Health Organization says AMR is an increasingly serious threat to global public health. It threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.

“I am delighted to be working with colleagues across the University of Southampton on this major interdisciplinary challenge” comments Michelle. “We are especially thankful for direct support from Professor Tim Leighton’s NAMRIP (Network for Anti-Microbial Resistance and Infection Prevention) as well as co-funding from the FSA and the University’s Economic and Social Research Council’s Impact Acceleration Account (IAA)”.

The event in London on 25 November will involve several speakers from the University of Southampton including Professor Guy Poppy who is also Chief Scientific Officer at the Food Standards Agency, Professor Tim Leighton and Professor Neil Wrigley. Dr Emma Roe, Professor Tom Cherrett and Dr Marc Dumont are also speaking.
