Our spin-out success have spanned a variety of industries.
We have launched 12 spin out companies since 2000 and over 50 since 1969. They originate from a broad range of fields and include oil and gas exploration, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology and optoelectronics. View our spin out company directory.
Our success in creating spin out companies was recently highlighted in a report by the influential research firm, Library House, chaired by former BBC Dragons’ Den panellist Doug Richards. The report drew favourable comparisons between the Universities of Southampton, Stanford and Cambridge, placing Southampton in the top 3 worldwide for the quality of our spin out companies.

Three of our spin outs - oil exploration company Offshore Hydrocarbon Mapping (OHM) plc, asthma research company Synairgen and fibre laser manufacturer SPI Lasers - have been floated on London’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM) with a combined market capitalisation value of £160 million.

Offshore Hydrocarbon Mapping (OHM) has grown to be a world leader in using electromagnetic imaging to survey the oceans, saving millions of pounds in the hunt for increasingly scarce oil and gas reserves - and is now valued at almost £108 million.
