Up to 75% of application forms are rejected because they are badly completed. Read this section to make sure that your application is viewed favourably.


Why employers use application forms

  • Employers get the information they want not what the candidate decides to give them
  • Everyone is asked the same information in the same way
  • Employers can quickly see if the candidate meets the criteria


Top tips

  • Complete a practice online application form at www.selectsimulator.com
  • Take your time
  • Download / photocopy the form and practise before starting on the real thing
  • Write or type legibly and don’t use correcting fluid
  • Read each question so you understand exactly what’s required. If the questions have multiple parts, answer each part systematically
  • Tailor your answers to the job/organisation - don’t use standard answers. Use punchy sentences and positive action words
  • Many employers ask competency based questions; for example, "Tell us about a time when you were part of a team. What happened and what was your role?" Remember to talk about what skills you used, not those of the group in general. Do not use too may words explaining the situation rather take the opportunity to highlight your skills of persuasion, co-operation, negotiating, initiating etc.
  • Unless stated otherwise, complete each section in reverse chronological order
  • Don’t leave blank spaces - if a section does not apply to you, write “N/A” or “Not Applicable”
  • Get someone else to check spelling / grammar and that you have answered the questions appropriately
  • Don’t forget to send a brief covering letter

On-line applications are often completed in a far more ‘casual’ way than paper applications so take care.

  • Download a copy so you can research and prepare before completing on-line
  • Don’t waffle - especially if you are allowed to write as much as you want
  • Some employers use software to scan for key words so research the job description/person specification and make sure you incorporate these into your application
