Business Innovation Programme

Business Innovation Programme

Is your organisation based in or around Southampton and facing a business issue? The Business Innovation Programme enables local businesses and third sector organisations to task ambitious students with a business issue and receive inspiring solutions to overcome them.

Students from a range of faculties and year groups will work in teams of 4 to come up with innovative solutions to the business problem. Projects run twice a year and last for 8 weeks during either Semester 1 or 2.

The Business Innovation Programme is supported by IBM, who facilitate the training programme for all students prior to projects commencing.

We will be accepting Client Forms for projects starting in February 2017 in due course.

It was refreshing to get a completely different perspective of what we have to offer as a Club. Their suggestions were well thought out, informed and practical, and we will certainly be acting on some of the leads they provided us.

How the Programme Works

Becoming a Client of the Business Innovation Programme has a number of benefits including:

  • Gaining a fresh approach to your business issues through talented, enthusiastic students
  • Receive insightful recommendations produced by the students through a final presentation and report
  • Students from a wide scope of disciplines who will bring a vast skillset to tackle your business issue
  • Recruitment and organisation of all students organised by the University

In order to participate in the Business Innovation Programme, you will need to submit a Business Innovation Client Form and signed Terms & Conditions Form (found in the Useful Downloads at the bottom of the page) to the Business Innovation Team for approval.

Each team of students then have eight weeks to consider the business issue and come up with a solution. They are then required to produce a written report and present their proposal to you and a member of the Careers and Employability Service.

Once the project begins, your involvement with the project will be as follows:

  • Providing students with the necessary information they will require to complete the project
  • Having an initial meeting with your student team and continued ad hoc support to students via email, telephone and face-to-face communication as required throughout the duration of the project
  • Attending the student presentation and final report submission, along with representatives from the Careers and Employability Service
  • You will be invited to, and have the chance to be nominated for, the Employability Awards - an opportunity to recognise the work done by all student groups; an opportunity for us to thank you for participating in the programme; time to meet other clients, University of Southampton staff and the student teams.
