FAQs about Career Planning

I haven't a clue what I want to do!  How do I start?

  • Book a place for the 'First steps to career planning' workshop.  See the Events calendar for details.
  • Call in to Career Destinations (building 37).  Staff can show you where to find resources which may be useful to you including details of what graduates from your degree subject are doing
  • Each year graduates are surveyed to find out what they are doing, you can see the national picture for your degree subject on Prospects and for Southampton graduates on the DLHE and subject microsites pages.
  • Go to Careers Fairs and employer presentations – these will give you an opportunity to meet with employers and find out about the types of jobs they are offering
  • Try one of the Computerised Careers Guidance programs – Prospects Planner or Adult Directions, accessible from the My future page of SUSSED.   Try all the TARGETjobs Careers Report.
  • Attend one of the Career Destinations workshops about the Myers Briggs Type Inventory - a personality assessment.
  • It’s always worth having a look at all the current vacancies on e-jobs to give you some ideas

I am not happy on my degree course and am thinking about leaving. Can you help me?

  • Make an appointment to see a Careers Adviser as soon as you can. You will be able to discuss all your options which will help you to make your decision.  Telephone or call in to book an appointment.
  • The Students Advice Centre can also help you, especially with advice about the financial implications of leaving your course.  They produce a helpful booklet which is available from SUSU and Career Destinations.
