Promotion for computational chemist Dr Graeme Day
Dr Graeme Day has been promoted to Professor of Chemical Modelling at the University of Southampton.
He is working with his eight strong team on improving theoretical methods for making the connections between molecular and crystal structures. His work aims at designing new materials with particular properties, as well as understanding the crystal packing of pharmaceutical molecules, where properties such as bioavailability or stability of a tablet depend on how molecules are arranged in the crystal structure.
Graeme, originally from Nova Scotia in Canada, joined Southampton in 2012 from the University of Cambridge. Since arriving at Highfield, he has built up a strong team of five postdoctoral researchers and three PhD students; another will arrive later in 2014. He has also been teaching undergraduate courses in crystallography and physical chemistry.
“I was pleased to be part of the group, led by Professor Jon Essex that secured a Centre for Doctoral Training at Southampton in the theory and modelling of chemical sciences, in collaboration with colleagues at the Universities of Bristol and Oxford,” he says. “This recognition of our expertise by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) will mean more high quality PhD students will join us each year for the next five years.”
He says he is delighted to be granted a personal chair and is grateful to colleagues in Chemistry for their support since arriving at Southampton.
