The University of Southampton has confirmed its place amongst the top 25 academic institutions in Europe according to the 2016 Nature Index Tables.

Southampton is ranked 24 amongst academic institutions in Europe, and nine in the UK, for its contribution to high-quality science papers published during 2015 across a group of 68 world-leading natural science journals, including Nature.

The Index also places Southampton at nine in Europe and six in the UK for research in Earth and Environmental Sciences; 13 in Europe and six in the UK for Physical Sciences; and 10 in the UK for Chemistry. Over 74 per cent of all papers in the Nature Index citing the University of Southampton feature international collaboration with institutions, particularly with partners across Europe, Asia and the United States.

In addition, Southampton showed the second highest amount of growth overall in the Index during the last four years by increasing the number of papers published in Nature’s journals by nine per cent since 2012.

Professor Tim Elliott, the University’s Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) said:

“Our performance in the Nature Index Tables is a great reflection of our national and international reputation for research by the University of Southampton in the natural sciences and a strong indicator of the quality, reach and impact of that research as published in these world’s leading journals,”

The Nature Index uses three measures to track data including article count based on the number of articles attributable to an institution; fractional count which focuses on the relative contribution made by individuals when there are multiple authors; and weighted fractional count which applies a weighting of just one-fifth to papers related to astronomy and astrophysics because of the high volume of papers in this field (approximately five times the equivalent of other fields).
