Talented Chemistry students rewarded at Graduation

Graduation

Summer graduation saw scores of talented Chemistry students receive their degrees at a ceremony at the University of Southampton. Friends and family watched with pride as the new graduates were congratulated by the academics who had taught them in the laboratory and lecture theatre.

At a reception on campus following the event, Andrea Russell, Director of Programmes and Professor of Physical Electrochemistry, presented prizes to 18 high achieving students. This recognised their achievements in project work, creating research posters and winning high marks in their exams and assessments.

Ron Leizrowice received a prize for the best BSc project “That was the best part of my degree,” he says. “I wanted a challenging project to take me out of my comfort zone. It involved building a new type of instrument for measuring the properties of new materials which could be used for next generation memory for smart phones and laptops.” During his time at Southampton, Ron seized his opportunity to take several placements including a summer project at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and at the University of Cambridge. After graduation, Ron is moving to the University of Oxford for a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry.

Fellow graduate Rachel Greenhill also undertook a placement as part of her Masters of Chemistry (MChem) degree. She studied in Munich for six months alongside undergraduates from around the world and her task was to create new molecules to connect proteins which may be of use in drug discovery. “I chose to come to Southampton because of the opportunity to do a placement and it was a good decision. I’m now going on to University College London to do a Masters in Crime and Forensic Sciences and ideally want to work in a laboratory for my career,” she explains. Rachel received a prize for outstanding performance in her degree.
