Latest analysis equipment donated to Chemistry

Published: 24 May 2017

International technology company Waters Corporation has donated £200,000 state-of-the-art ultrahigh performance supercritical fluid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPSFC-MS) instrumentation to Professor John Langley’s laboratory.

This long-established partnership enables researchers and students at Southampton to use industry-standard equipment in their analytical experiments; the equipment had previously been loaned to the University as part of an ongoing research collaboration.

John, who heads Characterisation and Analytics in Chemistry at the University of Southampton, uses chromatography and mass spectrometry in his collaborative research, particularly the petrochemical industry. “We enjoy good relations with leading equipment manufacturers such as Waters to enhance our research. This equipment is of great value because it open up new areas of analysis and is more environmentally friendly than its predecessors,” he says.

Undergraduate MChem project students, Laura Vile, has already received a prize at the Chemistry Poster Day for her work with this instrumentation. “Our research has enabled the incorporation of UHPSFC-MS into the open access mass spectrometry facility and gives students from undergraduates to PhD researchers access to these advances in analysis and a realistic insight into the work of industrial chemists,”  adds John.
