School of Chemistry
Learn how we aim to help teachers inspire their students and motivate the next generation of chemists.
It's been a busy term, with David's 'Biofuels Tour' taking him from Guildford to Poole, with talks tailored to the needs of students in Y10 and Y12 being delivered to support the curriculum and enthuse students in learning about chemistry's role in supporting a sustainable future.
Other highlights include the successful Video Conference link to a Nobel Event taking place in Lyon, France on Nov 20th. Schools in Toulouse, Gent and Eindhoven joined us in linking up with the hosts, where a panel of Nobel prizewinners and leading industrial and academic figures answered questions posed by students at the various institutions taking part. After some shaky technical moments at the start, things ran smoothly and the the discussion was facilitated by the use of voting pads ('zappers') to survey students in all of the venues. The event was organised by collaborators working under the European IDECAT programme, and was hosted in the Science Learning Centre South East, which is in the School of Chemistry. The image on the left is a molecule of aspirin. It is one of the most important drugs since it has been shown to have a wide range of health benefits, but is very cheap and easy to make. It is made from 9 carbon atoms (black), 4 oxygen atoms (red) and 8 hydrogen atoms (white). There are about 73,470,000,000,000,000,000 (73 million million million) of these molecules in every 200mg aspirin tablet!
