The Care Life Cycle

Researching the Supply and Demand of Health and Social Care Needs

This website records the achievements of the multidisciplinary "Care Life Cycle" research programme which ran from 2010 to 2015. Based at the University of Southampton, this research programme was funded by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) under its 'Complexity Science in the Real World' initiative.

Journal Articles

CLC research papers have been published in a number of diverse academic journals. These are all available for download.

Care Life Cycle research

In this YouTube video, Professor Jane Falkingham gave an overview of the Care Life Cycle project and presented three models that have been developed as part of the project.

The first is the 'Linked lives' model which looks at how changing family structures and living arrangements will effect the provision of informal social care in the future. In collaboration with Hampshire County Council, the second model helps forecast the number of older people in Hampshire who will require social care. Finally the third model, which has been developed in collaboration with Southampton University Hospital, is researching the links between health and social care for those with the eye condition Age-related macular degeneration. This talk was given to policy makers and practitioners at an event at the Royal Society in April 2014.

What is Complexity Science?

At the same event Professor Nigel Gilbert, from the University of Surrey, gave an introduction to Complexity Science and its relevance to public policy.

The terms multi level, non-linearity and emergence are introduced as ways of understanding society. Using examples, each term is described including the implications for policy analysis.
