ARCH6108 Individually Negotiated Topic 2

Module Overview

An Individually Negotiated Topic offers students the opportunity to explore in detail an archaeological area of their choice, by means of guided independent research. Subject areas are chosen in collaboration with the Programme Coordinator in agreement with the Director of Programmes. The content is negotiated individually between you and the tutor whose expertise most closely matches your interests. Module content and assessment modes are agreed by the end of the second week of the semester in which the course is taken and recorded on the student’s course selection form (returned to the Programme Coordinator). This module provides students with a short, highly supervised ‘bite’ of research on a topic of their choosing (within the range of topics for which the Department can provide expert supervision).

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

• familiarise you with some of the central issues in the archaeological area chosen • help you to identify the main themes, problems and practices in the sources central to the above issues • develop and polish skills of investigation, methodology, synthesis and presentation for archaeological study • allow you to undertake independent research in a closely defined area of archaeology • formulate your own distinctive approach to the selected field of archaeological research.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • knowledge and critical understanding of the central themes, problems and arguments in the area studied
  • understanding of a specific topic in archaeological analysis chosen by you in collaboration with the MA/MSc Coordinator, Director of Programmes and other staff as appropriate
  • mastery of analytical and investigative methods appropriate to the topic of your choice
  • the ability to undertake independent research appropriate to the production of an assessed essay
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • evaluate a wide range of material and engage critically with that material
  • develop a distinctive and significant approach to both primary evidence, and to dominant and emerging theoretical and critical trends
  • structure an archaeological research project
  • determine appropriate modes of presenting the results of your research
Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • research a complex topic independently
  • plan and present the outcome of your research clearly in written and oral form
  • write a clear and well structured overview of the main issues, methodologies and approaches relevant to the topic being examined
  • manage the time and resources available to you in order to achieve success in the above tasks

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • find resources of relevance to any given topic within the subject of Archaeology
  • distil, summarise and assess extant approaches to any given topic within the subject of Archaeology
  • apply methodologies appropriate to the topic in question
  • present your own approach to and research on any given topic within the subject of Archaeology

Syllabus

Syllabus content will vary depending upon the chosen focus of the topic negotiated, which must be agreed with the Programme Coordinator and Module Supervisor, and signed off by the Director of Programmes.

Special Features

Unscheduled research time will enable you to work independently, to manage your own study arrangements, and to develop a project within a field of particular interest to you, and which you will have selected in the light of the research interests of member of staff within the discipline of Archaeology. The individually negotiated nature of this topic will also prepare you for dissertation work, and for communicating and working effectively with colleagues.
