This module is one of the common core modules taken by all students on the programmes. Whilst the learning outcomes are the same no matter which of the programmes you are following, it is likely that your output from this module will reflect your programme.

Module Aims

- Enable you to better understand your work by evaluating the work which you produced in Specialist Practice 3A. - Assist you in the review and redefinition of the parameters of your work by developing a broader understanding of your ideas which will assist you in your Final Major Project. - Promote the development of critical and reflective abilities through the analysis of visual and written material. - Define the context in which you place your work. - Enable you to successfully produce a summary of your findings and identify working methods that will enable you to take your ideas forward once you have graduated.

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the relevance of key discipline-specific theoretical and contextual themes to your work
  • ways of communicating an informed and critical understanding of your work in the context of the discipline you are studying
  • an appropriate selection of material for the Reflective Journal supported by relevant analysis of the ideas it encompasses.
  • approaches involved in undertaking a clearly written and presented journal summary.
  • how different facets of your work inter-connect: the relationship between your discipline, context, concepts, materials, techniques and audience

  • formulate and develop an idea and broadly research its context, e.g. through web search or abstract association, in a sophisticated way.
  • recognise useful links between your contextual data suitable to advance your work in the Final Major Project
  • recognise issues and analyse their pertinence to the formation of more developed ideas relevant to your discipline

Syllabus

This module will facilitate reflection on ideas and practice, including any professional experience you have gained, to enable an understanding of the development of your work undertaken in the Specialist Practice 3A module and the Final Major Project. The Reflective Journal will enable you to understand the parameters of your discipline-specific practice and increasingly focus your thinking. It will assist you in increasingly applying insights drawn from enquiry into your practice in the development of work for the Final Major Project. You will produce a reflective account of your learning experiences that recognises the importance of key ideas, and draws links between thoughts and information, helping to hone your work into more sophisticated finished pieces. In this way, the Reflective Journal will also provide a method for tracking the development of your work in the final phase of your degree programme. It can take different forms, appropriate to your discipline, but will normally be a file containing visual references, annotations of practice and a self structured 4000-word essay of how various influences, observations and other important visual or academic inspiration have impacted upon the development work undertaken for the Final Major Project. It is a requirement that the 4000 word essay is typed. The ongoing journal supported with annotated images can be also typed or handwritten but it should be legible. This is accompanied by a bibliography with a minimum of 10 academic references.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching methods include: - Introduction to the module and how it moves on from Reflective Journal 2 - Lectures - Seminars - Face-to-face tutorials as appropriate Learning activities include: - Reflective Journal - Self-reflection - Independent analysis Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes: Learning in this module builds on the skills you developed through Reflective Journal 2B. It is intended to be highly independent and self-directed, supported by lectures and face-to-face tutorials. The approach encourages you to reflect on your specialist skills in a contemporary, discipline-focused context and the development of your ideas and work in Specialist Practice 3A and ongoing work in the Final Major Project. A self-reflective approach is essential that takes account of your now highly independent working practices. The critical work of the Journal will be mostly evidenced in your 4000 word self structured essay but should also be evidenced by way of critical comments, observations and reflective text inserted into your Journals notation, this notation is vital within your formative research, without this it will restrict your reflective processes and possibly impact upon the quality of your self structured essay. If you undertake professional experience you may receive formative face-to-face feedback from staff where you are located and will receive support electronically from WSA academics. The assessment of this module is the 4000 words self structured essay. The essay will be submitted via turn- it-in. It is intended that it will lay foundations for your work and research after graduation.
