This module is one of the compulsory modules taken by all students in the studio programmes at WSA. While the learning outcomes are the same across programmes, the content will be delivered with reference to your subject specialism and your output from this module will reflect your discipline. The module is informed by developments and the future outlook of UK policies on the creative industries, directing the emphasis on a commitment to creativity that supports you in pursuing a career in the creative industries

Module Aims

The aims of the module are to: - Provide a framework of academic skills at postgraduate level - Promote your recognition of the value of research in studio practice - Establish awareness of and a developmental approach to professional skills for employment

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The ability to use a range of academic approaches and techniques applicable to advanced scholarship in the subject.
  • How to develop your practice informed by scholarship and research.
  • The complexities and parameters of your professional field.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Evaluate and apply a variety of academic approaches to contextualise your practice.
  • Analyse, question and articulate the research methods that constitute or support your practice.

Indicative content for this module covers: Academic Study Skills - Academic Writing workshop - Academic Integrity - Critical analysis of primary and secondary sources - Identifying and selecting Library resources Research methods and planning - Generating and applying new ideas - The role of practice in action/ research - Making full use of information and communication technologies Professional Skills - Digital/creative content - Building a CV - Networking and the professional use of social media - Presentation skills ( preparation, presentation style and practice) - Time management and project planning
