FREN3032 ML French Independent Study Module (online)

Module Overview

This module involves an in-depth study of a particular area in the History, Culture or Linguistics of France drawing from the resources available for the following final year modules which are delivered in Southampton. FREN 3028 Gender and desire in French Literature and Culture. FREN 3029 Fragmented France : Cultures and identities in transition FREN3025 An ambivalent asylum : Histories and Memories of Refugees of early Twentieth Century France FREN3024 Flaubert’s France FREN3027 Empire and after: France and Algeria, 1830 to the present. Subject areas are chosen in collaboration with the module coordinators of the relevant FREN modules and the MLang Coordinator. The focus of the study is negotiated between the student and the FREN module coordinator and recorded on the student’s module selection form by the end of week 3. This module provides students on MLang French programmes with a highly supervised “bite” of research on a topic of their choosing within the scope of the available FREN modules and with access to the full of resources which are available to students studying those modules face to face.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

• introduce you to various scholarly approaches to an aspect of French Culture, History or Linguistics • Allow you to undertake independent research in that field in consultation with a member of staff • Develop and polish skills of investigation, methodology, synthesis and presentation

Syllabus

This module involves the supervision of students in individual online sessions leading towards the formal submission of the piece of independent study at the end of the second semester. You will have a bank of 6 hours of supervision time the use of which you will negotiate with the module coordinator. It is anticipated that the time will be shared between email contact and skype sessions and the precise nature of those sessions should be established in consultation with the module coordinator. It is suggested that the first 3 hours should be used in conjunction with the prescribed readings in order to establish that you have a clear understanding of the central themes and the main views and arguments which are relevant for your independent study. The second set of 3 hours can be used for close supervision of the proposed area of study.

Special Features

Unscheduled research time will enable you to work independently, to manage your own study arrangements and to develop a project within a field of particular interest to you. Online one-one and small group discussions will give you the opportunity to present and discuss your knowledge of the field as well as your work in progress. The individually negotiated nature of this topic will also prepare you for dissertation work. You will have the opportunity to write in the target language where appropriate.
