Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Communicate your research data, ideas, problems and solutions, contextualising knowledge and structuring and sustaining arguments
• Organise your activities to carry out the project within a limited time frame
• Work safely, efficiently and competently on your own and as part of a team
• Assimilate information from a variety of sources and utilise this to design and modify your research programme
• Demonstrate that you are able to obtain and accurately record and report research data using techniques that you perform and can validate
• Plan an effective and realistic systematic research programme designed to critically evaluate your research hypothesis
• Show clear evidence of independent thought in analysing, interpreting and evaluating research data, appreciating the limits of knowledge and a willingness to challenge received wisdom

You will investigate a range of research areas that are of interest and meet with potential supervisors, normally within the Faculty of Medicine, to learn more about the different possible projects. You will then select a supervisor and a suitable project to undertake for your MMedSc research project. You will also have the opportunity to design a project that aligns with the available methodologies to advance knowledge within your chosen field. Students will be required to submit a Faculty ethics application as part of their project.

Teaching and learning methods

• Seminars from the module lead
• One to one, or small group sessions with your academic/clinical supervisor
• Attendance at research seminars given by internal and external academic and clinical speakers
• Independent study
• Working with other researchers and technical/clinical staff in the research environment
• Presentation of research findings at intervals through the project at group or department level meetings.

General Resources

Learning Resources. • Project supervisors will provide guidance on reading associated with the project. • The library and associated electronic resources including access to journal articles. • Specialist software if considered critical for the project will be made available via either the university suite of licenced software, or by the project supervisor. • Access to data sets where necessary will be managed/made available by the project supervisor. • Guidance on all aspects of formative and summative assessments will be available via blackboard supported by the module lead.
