NPMS6018 Case-loading and Autonomous Midwifery practice

Module Overview

This module comprises 50% theory and 50% clinical practice. Theoretical component: The theoretical component will include a decision-making week followed by interactive sessions that build into transition to becoming a practising midwife. You will receive a 1:1 record-keeping audit by a supervisor of midwives to integrate you into the supervision process received as a qualified midwife. Practice component: You will be required to complete five caseload experiences throughout the third year. This will be organised and conducted within your agreed placement Maternity service provider. This will be introduced mid second year to allow time for planning and risk assessing. There is a risk assessment caseload document that needs completing per caseload. Each caseload will require a user feedback evaluation. This will be something that you will incorporate within a written reflection and add to your portfolio of evidence that will support future first post interviews.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Critically and systematically evaluate the role and importance of contemporaneous records in the provision of high quality maternity care across contexts, disciplines and settings
  • Give an evidence based justification for modifications /innovation in the provision of the effectiveness of programmes of care taking into consideration when modifications are requirement due to changes in clinical scenarios.
  • Critically analyse midwifery legislation in relation to individual practices and interprofessional working
  • Critically appraise the diagnostic and decision making skills required for the delivery of optimal care
  • Critically appraise the value of the client’s voice within maternity services taking into consideration the complexity of acknowledging the wide spectrum clients
  • Critical analyse your own professional activity, the role of the midwife, other professionals and support workers in the provision of high quality midwifery care.

Special Features

A caseload experience of a minimum of five women is expected as a course requirement. For each caseload experience, you will be required to collect a patient voice feedback sheet, which will be used within an in-depth reflection of each caseload experience. This module therefore links with the practice experience modules 5 and 6 for caseload exposure. You will be required to attend a record-keeping audit with a supervisor of midwives as a course requirement. The purpose of undertaking this audit is to identify key personal learning objectives to enhance care/documentation practice and to begin to engage in a statutory supervisory framework. You will be expected to engage in clinical audit, to consider how practice is monitored, evaluated and enhanced at a service and individual level.
