Aims and Objectives
The aim of this module is to have opportunity to share and enhance your knowledge, skills and experience in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. You will explore contemporary policy and legislation relating to safeguarding and child protection. Whilst considering key concepts within current practice, reflecting upon and exploring practice issues. This module aims to build upon students theoretical background of clinical and legal issues to enhance understanding whilst critically examining practice which is encompassed within the United Kingdom and International Law.
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Critically analyse contemporary national safeguarding children policy and legislation.
- Critically examine the evidence base for recognising and responding to indicators of child maltreatment
- Evaluate the contribution of your service to achieving positive outcomes for all children and young people
- Critically debate the challenges and opportunities of integrated working with other agencies and organisations
- Demonstrate specialised knowledge and understanding of an area of safeguarding practice relevant to your role
This syllabus will examine recent significant developments in the field of safeguarding and child protection. The syllabus will enable you to enhance your practice by critically examining the knowledge skills and frameworks required in the care of children young people and their families. This module will support a philosophy of inter-agency working and anti-oppressive practice. You will learn about: • Contemporary Safeguarding Legislation, Policy and Practice • Consideration of professional Roles and Responsibilities • Theoretical Frameworks • Child Maltreatment : Prevention, identification and referral • The Child and Young person within contemporary society • Communication skills for escalating concerns and when communicating with children, young people and their families/carers • Legal, ethical and professional issues • Current safeguarding and child protection research Current Perspectives Safeguarding children is a high profile area of work, where decision making carries a high order of risk for children, it is an area of practice characterised by anxiety, uncertainty and requiring complex assessments of what constitutes risk. There is an increasing demand for professionals and others across a wide range of disciplines and sectors to develop an in-depth knowledge of child protection work and to demonstrate effective, evidence based skills. The module in Safeguarding and Child Protection: Children and Young People –Developing Practice was developed to offer opportunities for continuing personal and professional development through the development of in-depth knowledge to support practitioners and others whose work or research interests lay within the wide range of services for children, young people, their parents or carers. The multi-disciplinary backgrounds and experiences of candidates are an important value added element of the course, mirroring the multi-agency working which underpins all contemporary children’s services which is required by contemporary legislation and guidance.
As part of the module you will attend Winchester Crown Court to gain insight and awareness of Court Process and witness court Protocol.
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
The teaching is centred upon andragogical teaching theory (Knowles 1990). You will take responsibility for your learning, identifying your own learning needs in relation to the learning outcomes/teaching content of the module and taking responsibility for addressing these, both in the classroom and through self-directed learning. This requires self-motivation and self-directed study. You will be expected to participate in guided classroom/small group discussions (in relation to scenarios, research papers and reflections upon practice) to learn with and from other practitioners, to enable you to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Teaching methods will include • Scenario based lectures • Lectures to critically debate evidence based knowledge for practice, using both PowerPoint and turning point (participative) technologies, • Workshops to critically examine relevant research papers and evidence based guidelines • Small group discussions/presentations • Practitioner led seminars • Mock Multi agency Child Protection conference to explore critical thinking and report writing skills • Sessions taught by practitioners engaged in research activities An interactive blackboard site provides electronic access to lecture notes, current research, interactive learning tools and relevant websites. You will be expected to engage with the electronic material in preparation for discussion during timetabled sessions.

Formative Assessment Case Presentation – maximum 15 minutes You will be required to present a case study to the group which focuses on Either • an early intervention/preventative strategy, Or • a policy based response to a safeguarding and promoting welfare issue from within your own area of practice. This will involve: self assessment and 360 peer assessment. Summative Assessment You are required to present an essay of 3000 words which demonstrates a critical analysis of the case study which draws upon best available evidence. You must achieve a minimum of 40% to pass the assessment 100% of the mark is for the essay. A discussion between you, your manager/mentor and the module leader will enable you to identify and plan the focus of your written assignment in relation to the achievement of the learning outcomes. The required level of academic writing for the programme will be demonstrated through the adequacy of the case study, the degree to which self-awareness and insight are achieved and through critical appraisal of current practice issues and research. The in depth knowledge base and understanding will be demonstrated through critical discussion of the supportive/contrasting theory and research and its contribution to assessment.
