This is for people who are starting to use CBT in their clinical practice. The overall aim is for you to begin to acquire practical cognitive behavioural therapy skills in the assessment, formulation and treatment of people with common mental health problems.

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Assess, formulate and start treating a person with common mental health problems at a novice level (achieve a minimum rating of 24 on the Cognitive Rating Scale - Revised (CTS-R; Blackburn, James, Milne & Reichelt, 2000). This module is preparation for CBT Supervision 1
  • Apply theory to practice
  • Critically evaluate your own CBT practice
  • Use CBT supervision effectively

Syllabus

The precise syllabus content is driven by the patients you will bring to supervision. However core content common to all supervision groups will include the following: • application of evidence based CBT theory and models • CBT assesment and formulation • Critical appraisal using the Cognitive Therapy Scale - Revised (CTS-R) • Assessment and management of risk If this is your first supervision module you are also required to attend a one-day workshop on preparation for supervision and using the CTS-R to develop your own therapeutic practice.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Clinical supervision in small groups; work in a clinical setting. You must bring two new cases to supervision and we strongly encourage you to see additional cases who are being supervised in your clinical service. You will need to bring a live therapy excerpt to each supervision session, to accompany a specific supervision question. Supervisors will use a variety of methods to facilitate your development including discussion, demonstration, role play, and homework exercises. Theory/practice links will be made. Other related teaching and learning activities include observation of other accredited therapists and the availability of multi-media resources.

Assessment

Assessment Strategy

This module will be assessed by a combination of formative and summative methods. Formative assessment: • The use of excerpts of recorded therapy sessions to illustrate issues for discussion with the supervisor. This will be a formal requirement for formative assessment as well as underpin the content of supervision • Student and supervisor ratings of a full therapy session and supervisor feedback using the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale Revised (CTS-R; Blackburn, James, Milne & Reichelt, 2000). Summative assessments: You need to pass all assignments to pass the module.

Costs associated with this module

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

In addition to this, students registered for this module typically also have to pay for:

You will need to have access to equipment to (i) video record therapy sessions, and (ii) encrypt and upload these recordings securely to the University. All students studying the level 2 BABCP accredited IAPT Diploma will have their equipment provided by their employing NHS Trust. All other students are responsible for providing their own equipment as discussed at interview, at the Introduction to Supervision and CTS-R day, and in the Student Handbook. You or your employer (typically the NHS) will be responsible for all costs related to your clinical work. If you are taking supervision modules you are required to become a member of BABCP prior to start of your programme.
