Cuban Oral History: Memories of the Cuban Revolution

Voices of Contemporary Cubans

The research project Memories of the Cuban Revolution has been recording in-depth life history interviews throughout the island since 2004. By 2015 we had interviewed more than 125 women and men from different generations and social positions, with diverse racial, gender, sexual and religious identities, and political views. Most of them talked with us many times over the years.

Cuban Oral History: Memories of the Cuban Revolution

This is the first large oral history project authorized by the Cuban government since a similar study led by Oscar Lewis was closed in 1970.

Elizabeth Dore is Project Director. The project has been carried out under the auspices of the University of Southampton in the UK, and the Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual (CENESEX) in Cuba, whose Director is Mariela Castro Espín. The research project was principally funded by the The Ford Foundation and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). The British Academy, Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK (AHRC), the Leverhulme Trust, and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, among others, also provided grants.
