Footprints

(Words by Tessa Atton)

A tiny rural church, a long history, so many people walking down the long path into the church, leaving their footprint over the centuries...and so many ways of interpreting them. My PhD research asks how artists might individually and collaboratively respond to this footprint and convey something of the spirit of the place.

This exhibition brings seven artists’ responses together, creating a new set of footprints and a new set of responses. We have chosen an unusual space to place our work, one with its own set of footprints: the ground floor of the Rotunda at Winchester School of Art is a circular space that houses the library archives.

Overhung by the huge, airy, though underused, main part of the building, it has something of the feel of a crypt and hasn’t been used as a gallery before. We are using the alcoves created by the archive furniture to develop installations and show work in a range of media.

At the same time the work will be shown on the big screen in the foyer of the new Westside Theatre opposite, hoping to create an interesting contrast in the feel of the responses as they move from the intimacy of the alcoves to the wide open visibility of the screen.

Special event
15:00 - 18:00, Thursday 11 May (no booking necessary)

To celebrate Footprints (of Stoke Charity), the seven artists displaying their work will be at the exhibition on 11 May. Visitors are invited to take the opportunity to talk to the artists about their work and to enjoy some light refreshments.
