Economics student trading success

Published: 30 January 2014

An MSc Finance and Economics student has won a national competition to trade in live market conditions.

Beating off strong competition from Oxford, Queen Mary’s, UCL, York, Durham, Bristol and Bath, student Lanre Dada was deemed the best candidate in the competition run by Amplify Trading from their new trading floor.

Amplify commented that Lanre ‘traded calmly and patiently to yield an overall PnL of $6,390.00 for the afternoon.’

Many of the people who attended the competition were invited after attending the Futures in Finance Conference, held in Southampton in 2013.

Lanre says of the event, “The day itself was a very interesting insight into the life of a day trader and the many factors they have to constantly consider in order to attain the best result. Needless to say, it was at times stressful and required a certain degree of patience and confidence in your strategy, especially when the markets are moving in the opposite direction you predicted. We traded the real markets (Euro/USD, crude oil and the S&P 500) but with fake money. The biggest event of the day was a data release on US crude oil stock, this had the potential to be a big game changer."

Lanre previously completed his undergraduate studies at Southampton in Economics and is able to practise his trading with our new Bloomberg suite.
