“The University of Southampton stood out for me as having the best of both worlds.”
My experience
Choosing Southampton
The University of Southampton stood out for me as having the best of both worlds… it is a campus university with everything you need with in easy reach, but at the same time has the benefits of city life on its doorstep. It has a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time provides an excellent environment to study, providing all the support and facilities you need.
Studying economics
The economics course at Southampton provides a wide range of opportunities. Options are diverse and give you plenty of choice to specialise in the area which interests you most. Having the opportunity to study lots of different areas of economics means that by the time you come to choose your dissertation topic you have a clear idea of what you would like to spend time researching, making it an exciting opportunity.
The main strength of the course is the wide range of options, enabling you to personalise the course to your own interests, making it most relevant to you. The course incorporates micro- and macroeconomics as well as statistics, but goes beyond this, allowing you to take options in the Division and outside.
Opening up career paths
I have always been interested in aspects of finance and business. I chose to study economics as it is a diverse subject that does not restrict you to one career path and gives an excellent core understanding of a wide range of topics, ranging from statistics to the macroeconomy to development economics.
Living in Southampton
Southampton is a city with excellent transport links to cities along the south coast and other major cities, making it easy to travel home for the weekend or to visit friends. The city has all of the facilities you could need and is only a short journey away. Both the city and campus have a relaxed atmosphere, making it easy to settle into university life and to enjoy your time here.
The future
The past two years studying economics here at Southampton has got me excited about my future career path and has given me many opportunities both within my course and the University community.
