Professional development opportunities

The Mathematics and Science Learning Centre at University of Southampton provides professional development opportunities for teachers, lecturers and support staff throughout their career.  The Centre supports educators in identifying and implementing teaching and learning approaches based on the very best education research, evidence-based approaches and classroom practice.  We work in partnership with schools and colleges across the South of England to harness best practice and enhance impact on students' learning.

The Centre works closely with the Mathematics and Science Education (MaSE) Research Centre to translate the world class research in Southampton Education School to strategies that can be used in schools and colleges.

MSLC offers a range of flexible support from scheduled professional development, action research programmes with the option to link to Masters-level qualifications, subject knowledge enhancement plus (SKE+) in mathematics, physics and chemistry, funded projects and bespoke, personalised support.

MSLC hosts the secondary science PGCE programme, physics SKE and laboratory sessions for primary science. During June and July it also hosts the Computer Science SKE that prepares applicants for the PGCE IT&CS and the School Direct programme.

We support outreach activity for the University and host a range of events.

“Professional development for STEM teachers is key in developing inspiring teaching and learning. At Southampton, we firmly believe in providing opportunities for teachers to access and use research from STEM subjects and from education to bring science and mathematics alive in the classroom. We work with colleagues across the University to translate our world class research into practical approaches and resources for teaching.”
