Hard work rewarded for Education students
Undergraduates on the University of Southampton’s new programmes in BSc Education and BSc Education and Psychology have received certificates of achievement at a ceremony at the Southampton Education School. The students were praised for their hard work and progress in their first and second years of study.
The new degrees examine education in its wider aspects, exploring topics such as social justice and inclusion, digital literacy and education from an international perspective as well as gaining a strong grounding in research methods. Students wanting to become teachers will have to apply for a PGCE or School Direct training path, after graduation.
Head of Education, Professor Anthony Kelly presented the certificates to Charlotte Gauld, Charles Maton, Jasmine Dhoot, Lowri James, Jonathan Price, Marta Oppenheim, Lucy Westron, Tasmin Humphrey and Laura Hughes.
"Education is very much in the news these days and this is an exciting time to be studying the subject," he says. "I believe graduates with this qualification will be well-placed for successful careers in many fields such as policymaking, charities and publishing as well as classroom teaching."
Tasmin, who is in her third year studying Education and Psychology, says: "I enjoy the two flavours of my degree very much with the insight into the different disciplines. There are so many opportunities at the University of Southampton." Second year Education student Charles adds: "I like the combination of an academic education with a practical approach to the subject."
