University's trainee teachers off to Africa!
Imagine you are a trainee teacher and you find yourself in a remote part of Africa, with no electricity, no water, not enough desks, pens or paper and 60 children to teach! This is the challenge facing a group of Primary and Secondary trainee teachers from Southampton Education School’s PGCE course.
On Saturday, 28th March, accompanied by their tutors Melanie Smith and Julie Reynolds, the trainees will be travelling to Nakuru, Kenya to put their teaching skills in to practice. However, this promises to be a very different experience to the one they are currently enjoying on teaching practice here in the UK, as they will be working in schools serving some of Kenya’s poorest children.
As well as teaching, the trainees will be involved in sports coaching, the feeding programme and building projects. They will also be visiting some of their pupils at home, on the nearby landfill site.
