Event details

As part of a funded programme of professional development for science in Kent, we have established four areas of focus for an action research programme. The sessions will focus on evidence-based interventions, drawing on a plethora of existing research about the effectiveness of a range of approaches, and how to apply in the classroom. Participants will then select interventions to try in their own situation and explore how to plan, carry out and evaluate impact. The intention is to develop local, area-based research clusters to continue the programme and to feed into local networks of schools and colleges.

Content

This professional development programme will support science teachers, and particularly groups or ‎clusters of teachers, in evaluating the effectiveness of their interventions in the classroom. ‎Following a needs analysis activity in Kent, we have developed four sessions based on:‎

Engagement and motivation
Monday June 23‎ ‎9:30 to 15.30‎
Dartford Science & Technology College, Heath Lane, Dartford, Kent DA1 2LY

Mathematics and science
Tuesday June 24‎ ‎9:30 to 15.30‎
King Ethelbert School, Canterbury Road, Birchington, Kent CT7 9BL

Post-16– transition, retention and related issues
Wednesday June 25‎ ‎9:30 to 15.30‎
Maidstone Grammar School, Barton Road, Maidstone, Kent ME15 7BT

Careers and progression
Thursday June 26 ‎9:30 to 15.30‎
Weald of Kent Grammar School, Tudeley Lane, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 2JP

Each session will focus on the following:‎

  • How to carry out education ‎research ‎in the classroom
  • How to frame a research question to address specific issues
  • How to establish an evidence base for the area(s) of interest
  • How to identify effective interventions and implement in the context of your classroom
  • How to assess the impact of interventions by collecting and analysing evidence

We aim to develop classroom research networks which will follow on with discussion and ‎evaluation of the impact of your research on teaching and ‎learning and your own practice. You will ‎have access to research from the Mathematics & Science Education Centre at Southampton ‎Education School, together with advice, guidance and general education research resources. There ‎will be opportunities to build in Masters-level accreditation, ranging from short modules to an ‎entire Masters programme. Please see the following link for further ‎details – ‎ MA (Ed) Dissertation through flexible study.
