Event details

This event will showcase activities from a Primary Science Teaching Trust funded project that teachers, University Researchers and the Mary Rose Museum have taken part in over the last year. This one day event is free to attend for primary teachers interested in finding out more and potentially becoming involved in a science enquiry network.

The Mathematics and Science Learning Centre is delighted to invite you to a primary professional development day at the Mary Rose Museum within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We are working with three schools in Southampton on a science inquiry project funded by the Primary Science Teaching Trust. At this event, you will have the opportunity to explore enquiry skills in the context of the environment of the new Mary Rose Museum and share the experiences of the teachers who are taking part in the project.
The project is shaped around involvement from:

  • Twelve primary teachers from three schools in Southampton
  • Staff from the Mary Rose Museum
  • Researchers from the University of Southampton who have been involved in research with the Mary Rose Trust and Museum
  • Support from staff at the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre
  • Support from the Primary Science Teaching Trust

Teachers have worked with researchers to explore how inquiry works in the “real world” and have spent a day at the Mary Rose Museum to look at how inquiry is used in this context. Questions that can be asked include, “Why did the Mary Rose Sink? How did the salvage process bring up the ship in one piece? What can we learn about conservation from the Mary Rose?”. Teachers are currently trying activities in the classroom and exploring the impact on learning and teaching – this will be shared with you on the day.
