Register from 9am for a start at 9:15 am to 12:30

Find out about approaching inquiry in a formative way, based on the outputs from EU FP7 projects looking at assessment of inquiry. This approach is useful for focusing on progression and is more successful than using NC levels. We will reflect on how teachers can be explicit about articulating the good work they do with assessment so that colleagues can build on previous work rather than start afresh in each year, key stage or phase.

Free copy of "Beyond the Black Box" to those who register before Friday 13th March.

The new programmes of study have no level descriptors and schools are encouraged to develop their own strategies for reporting on progress. This workshop will explore how this opportunity can be used to develop an approach which gives useful feedback to both students and teachers about progress being made and the next steps needed. It starts from a perspective of what constitutes success in science and proposes an approach that returns assessment to one of its most important functions – that of raising attainment.

This led to a number of other national and international research projects and consultancies in the area of classroom assessment. More recently, Chris has developed a line of work relating to teachers' professional learning and has been involved in classroom research investigating evidence-based practice with a focus on use of portfolios and diaries as reflective professional tools.
