Effective talk for learning underpins every curriculum area in the National Curriculum and is fundamental to teaching. In this session David will outline how the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms can be improved by developing the effectiveness of classroom conversations.
The session will :
- consider research findings which indicate what is meant by effective talk, including dialogic teaching
- discuss examples of classroom discourse and identify key practical features that lead to deeper learning
- consider the understandings that we need to develop when preparing for how we talk with pupils; rich contexts, authentic questions, responding to the content of children’s answers, building learning conversations, etc
- consider the ground rules which support pupil/pupil learning conversations
- help participants to identify areas to work on in their own schools/classrooms and plan next steps to be undertaken

Speaker information
David Reedy,Cambridge Primary Review Trust,is co-author of ‘Teaching Grammar Effectively in the Primary School’. He has had an extensive career in primary education, including as a teacher, UKLA former President and currently General Secretary, as well as still being Co- Director for the Cambridge Primary Review Trust and, until recently, Principal Primary Schools Adviser in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
