Event details

Sir James Matthews Education Lecture 2011

This lecture will illustrate and discuss a whole variety of current changes in English education policy and practice which are re-positioning education as a private good and opportunity for profit – as a commodity! Professor Ball will argue that the pressures on families to strive for social advantage and the pressures on business to find new markets are changing the landscape of English educational provision in profound ways. These changes are occurring for the most part with little public discussion of the value and values of the new forms of education which are emerging and yet may incur considerable social cost to us all.

The Education Lecture was established in 1987 in memory of Sir James Matthews, who devoted his life to public service and public education. Sir James was a leading figure in the post-war reconstruction and development of Southampton and many of the civic, cultural and educational features of the city today are testimony to his vision and hard work. The Sir James Matthews Education Lecture is held annually on a topic of relevance to current educational policy.
