The role of academic middle manager (e.g. head of the department) is critical for the success of institution-wide initiatives.

The role of academic middle manager (e.g. head of the department) is critical for the success of institution-wide initiatives. In recent years, universities internationally have established a number of formal development programmes to train academic middle managers. However, the vast majority of academics lead without any formal training. How did they learn to manage and lead? How did they acquire the attributes necessary? How have these roles developed and changed in recent years? This seminar will explore these questions drawing on the biographical accounts of academics holding middle level management positions in Japan.
