PGCE Post Compulsory Education & Training (PCET) with QTLS (2 yrs)
The programme is a recognised teaching qualification for graduates who are teaching and/or training, on a full or part time ibasis, in further education, or in public or private sector organisations.
It is a valuable professional development programme for all adult trainers, those working in adult and community education, the health services, social services, armed forces, police and emergency services and youth work. You will develop skills in planning, delivering and assessing learning activities, combined with the understanding of the learning process and background to post-compulsory education and training.
To Apply
Applications should be made directly to your local participating Centre and your place will be confirmed by the University of Southampton. You should be aware that, as a professional course, you are responsible for ensuring that you have a minimum of 150 hours teaching over the two years of the programme.
There will be no recruitment of Year 1 students for this programme in 2012-13. However, suitably qualified or experienced candidates may be entitled to enter year two of the course as a direct entrant.
You can obtain an application form (including references section) from the Centre, or download it from the link on the right of this page.
Accreditation
This new and revised Programme has been established to meet the changing needs and demands of the sector and also fully consistent with the requirements of the LLUK, the IfL, OFSTED, Higher Education Academy (HEA), and the QAA
subject benchmarks for Education Studies. The course has received SVUK endorsement.
On successful completion of the PGCE, trainers, tutors and teachers in the further education and skills sector, are able to register and become licensed practitioners through Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) and Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) status. This licence will be conferred through a process of Professional Formation, defined in the 2007 Regulations as “the post-qualification process by which a teacher demonstrates through professional practice the ability to use effectively the skills and knowledge acquired whilst training to be a teacher and the capacity to meet the occupational standards required of a teacher”.

Typical course content
Year One concentrates on practical teaching and planning skills, development of teaching resources, and identifying and supporting the needs of individual students. Year Two puts more emphasis upon research and critical analysis of teaching and learning activities, course planning and the management of teaching in PCET.
You will develop skills in planning, delivering and assessing learning activities, combined with the understanding of the learning process and background to post-compulsory education and training.
Please note: This specification provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if s/he takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information can be found in the programme handbook (or other appropriate guide).
Teaching on the programme is intended to model and exemplify good practice. Sessions are intended to be interactive and stimulating, drawing on the academic backgrounds of the students. Modes of learning include: timetabled sessions (which include all lectures, seminars, small group meetings and tutorials); personal tutorials; directed and self-directed study. Video, web-based, case study and fieldwork resources are also used. Formal lectures and seminars are used primarily to provide an overview of material and to develop and illustrate key concepts. In interactive sessions and in their own practice students are expected to implement and evaluate the principles of teaching, learning and professional values to which they have been introduced during the programme.
All students are assessed both formatively and summatively. Experience at all stages of the programme is tracked and recorded. Staff and students regularly negotiate targets for students’ further development during the programme. Methods of assessment are designed in line with the intended learning outcomes and intended skills development for the programme. These methods are reviewed by SOE programme.
Your teaching will be observed on a minimum of five occasions in Year One and four in Year Two.
As a student of the University of Southampton you are entitled to use our full range of resources, from the library with its wide range of on-line electronic journals and specialist publications to our sports and recreation facilities. If you are enrolled via a partner college, you will of course also have access to their facilities, in line with that college's policies.
